Plan for the mature tree
Compare mature height and spread, winter hardiness, sunlight and soil drainage. Leave appropriate space for roots and branches. Check regional guidance for the species, including its tendency to spread, before using it in a landscape or restoration project.
Tree seed questions
Do all tree seeds need cold stratification?
No. Some species need a period of cold, moist conditions; others require treatment of a hard seed coat or a different preparation. Follow species-specific instructions instead of applying one soaking or chilling schedule to every tree seed.
Will a seed-grown tree match a named variety?
Seedlings can vary in shape, color and other traits. A named parent type does not guarantee an identical seedling. Many cultivars are maintained through grafting or other vegetative propagation.
Can I grow tree seeds in containers?
Containers can be useful for raising seedlings. Long-term suitability depends on the species, root space and care, and many trees eventually need a suitable outdoor planting site. Growing a tree in a small pot does not automatically make it a bonsai.
