Add Salal to your garden for a versatile, evergreen shrub that offers beauty, wildlife benefits, and edible berries!
Salal (Gaultheria shallon) is a hardy evergreen shrub known for its glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of delicate, bell-shaped white to pink flowers, followed by edible dark blue berries. Native to the Pacific Northwest, Salal is perfect for woodland gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers well-draining, acidic soil.
This low-maintenance plant is drought-tolerant once established and provides year-round interest with its dense foliage and attractive berries, which are enjoyed by wildlife and can be used in jams and jellies.
I do not have an indoor garden so I am waiting until spring to plant. I will try planting closer to Feb or March in small pods watering with spray bottle, and slowly introduce the plants to outdoor conditions.
