Grow a perennial onion patch with a memorable twist. Egyptian walking onions form little bulbs at the tops of their stalks; when those stalks bend down, the bulbs can take root nearby. Start yours with 12 live topset bulbils for planting and enjoy an established patch of flavorful greens in seasons to come.

Growing Information
-
Also called: Egyptian tree onion, topset onion, walking onion; formerly Allium cepa var. proliferum.
-
Life cycle: herbaceous perennial.
-
Light: full sun, ideally 6 or more hours daily.
-
Soil: fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Avoid waterlogged ground.
-
Mature height: about 2–3 feet; allow room for clumps to spread.
-
Outdoor hardiness: a practical starting range is USDA zones 4–8. Local heat, drainage and winter conditions affect performance.
How to Plant
- Prepare a sunny permanent bed or a container with drainage holes. Plant promptly after arrival while soil is workable; use a container if the ground is frozen.
- Set bulbils pointed end up, approximately 1–2 inches deep and 6 inches apart. Water after planting.
- Keep soil evenly moist without leaving it soggy, and remove competing weeds gently. A light straw mulch can help protect an outdoor planting over winter.
- Let the patch establish during its first growing season. From the second season, trim greens as you would chives, leaving enough foliage for growth.
- Collect topsets before they fall if you want to limit spreading. Lifting an underground bulb removes that individual plant.
FAQ
Are these onion seeds?
No. These are living aerial bulbils. Egyptian walking onions are normally propagated with topsets or divisions, not viable seed.
Will every bulbil make topsets next year?
Not necessarily. Development depends on bulbil size, establishment and growing conditions. Smaller bulbils may need longer.
Can I harvest all the greens immediately?
Give new plants their first season to establish. Harvest lightly once established and leave plants to maintain the patch.
