Beach Plum Seeds (Prunus Maritima) | Edible Fruit Bush, Shrub Patio

This east coast native makes for an excellent patio shrub or small tree and has been found growing naturally all along the Atlantic. These plum shrubs are salt-resistant. Likewise, they can grow in sand and saline-rich grounds if need be. They are just as happy to grow in regular soil, however. The Beach Plum shrub is super hardy, bearing many fruits for the picking!

Bushy Prunus Maritima trees are cold hardy and grow from 4-10 ft. tall (if allowed to grow without pruning). Decadent pink blooms appear in May through June and open into picturesque white flowers. Fruits will show up throughout summer through September at which time colorful fall foliage can be enjoyed.

The gourmet plum fruits of Prunus Maritima can be eaten fresh off of the branches. Ripe plum fruits are delicious in jams, jellies, and pies and come in different colors as can be seen in the photos. If you have a special spot near a beach or sand to plant these, P. Maritima would make for an ideal choice. Otherwise, plant this hardy plum species in your patio, backyard, or garden and enjoy ladder-free fruit picking all summer long.

Germination Instructions: Apply cold stratification or sow in the fall for spring germination. Pro tip: Cold stratification means placing and wrapping the seeds into a moist paper towel. Then place paper toweled seeds into a ziplock bag and sticking into the freezer for 2-3 months to break dormancy and simulate winter. Sow the seeds into moist sand, peat moss, or loam for the remainder of the germination period (2-3 months).
