This small tree with a broad, rounded crown and masses of spectacular star-shaped, scented, pink flowers must be among the most perfect ornamental trees for warm temperate climates. It looks simply heavenly, especially when in flower, is deciduous only briefly in cooler winters, fast-growing but stays a reasonable size, hardy to some drought and moderate freezes, and easy to grow from seed.
Perhaps that latter point is its only drawback, it tends to self-sow in the garden quite prolifically in suitable conditions. Dais Cotinifolia is native to southern Africa, Madagascar, and the Comoros Islands and is a hugely popular ornamental in South Africa while surprisingly little-known elsewhere.
Native to South Africa.
Prefers light to medium well-drained soil in a protected sunny position, drought and frost resistant.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°;C for this species.
yes id did buy and receive bamboo seeds from you. i planted same and now cautiously await some indication the sprouting will begin. we are in northern nj where it is quite cold so i am keeping the plantings in a planter system we use for seedlings. only time luck and patience will tell the ultimate story. if the seeds come to be small plants we will replant into pots until spring and after that we are guardedly optimistic. thanks for the request and service. stewart a farber
I do not have an indoor garden so I am waiting until spring to plant. I will try planting closer to Feb or March in small pods watering with spray bottle, and slowly introduce the plants to outdoor conditions.
