Pinus pinea | Italian Stone, Umbrella or Parasol Pine
Pinus pinea is a tree/conifer in the Pinaceae family. It is also known as the Italian stone pine, umbrella pine, and parasol pine. A possible native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, and Syria.
The species was introduced into North Africa millennia ago, such a long time that it is indistinguishable from being a native anywhere specific can be said. Used since prehistoric times for an edible snack.
It is grown in and around California since 1956. It can grow very tall, all the way to 80 feet but is usually seen around 60 feet tall. The beautiful umbrella canopy sets it apart from other pines. The very thick bark is layered like plates with a red-brown color to it. It is drought tolerant and loves the full sun. Zones 8-10
Germination
Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Soak seeds for 12 hours. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and cover seeds to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate very slowly and may take more than a year to germinate.
yes id did buy and receive bamboo seeds from you. i planted same and now cautiously await some indication the sprouting will begin. we are in northern nj where it is quite cold so i am keeping the plantings in a planter system we use for seedlings. only time luck and patience will tell the ultimate story. if the seeds come to be small plants we will replant into pots until spring and after that we are guardedly optimistic. thanks for the request and service. stewart a farber
I do not have an indoor garden so I am waiting until spring to plant. I will try planting closer to Feb or March in small pods watering with spray bottle, and slowly introduce the plants to outdoor conditions.
