Thimbleberry Seeds (Rubus Parviflorus) Flowering Raspberry Sweet Berry Fruit
Thimbleberry raspberry is both a beautiful and functional shrub. It is an erect-growing hedge that can grow to be quite large (up to 10 ft tall). It boasts bigger than average white flowers that notably, have a natural beauty.
The thorn-less canes form from buds and shoot out of the soil and branch out very fast and grow edible fruits by year 2! The raspberry fruits are deliciously sweet and high in vitamin C. The fruits are used in jams, jellies, and pies, or eaten fresh.
The leaves and roots of perennial Rubus parviflorus are boiled to make a medicinal "thimbleberry tea" The tea is said to ease stomach upsets. The medicinal properties of the leaves are antiemetic, astringent, blood tonic, and stomachic.
How to Care for Thimbleberry Raspberry
Cut canes down to 6 inches beginning the second year and then every year thereafter. The best time to prune year two is in July, after collecting the first fruits. Fertilize or compost the plants once a year, feeding them a high nitrogen content. Ensure well-draining soil.
Germination Procedure
Soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours. Next, Cold/moist stratify seeds for 2 months in the freezer before sowing. Surface sow seeds by gently pressing the seeds into soil moisture (only about 1/16th of an inch). Sow seeds during the fall or spring.
I do not have an indoor garden so I am waiting until spring to plant. I will try planting closer to Feb or March in small pods watering with spray bottle, and slowly introduce the plants to outdoor conditions.
