Regular price $17.99 Sale

An unusual epiphytic plant native to the rainforests of the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Novice growers consider an exotic plant too delicate and capricious, so they do not dare to buy it for home cultivation. In fact, phalaenopsis is the most unpretentious of all orchid species. And yet the creation of an artificial microclimate is necessary for it.

It is a racemose inflorescences of bright colors on long peduncles, at the base framed by juicy green leaves. Although the humid climate of the subtropics is radically different from home conditions, the orchid has adapted perfectly to them. Keeping an unusual flower in an apartment requires an elementary approach.

Instructions for planting and care

In order to avoid infection, all manipulations are carried out very quickly over the steam. To do this, put a wide pot of boiling water on the fire. Above it, it is better to fix the grid, on which you can put the dishes.

Immediately before sowing the seed surface was sterilized: they are transferred into an empty sterile vial or jar, a closed tube, pipette, add a small amount of 2-percent hydrogen peroxide, stoppered, incubated for 5-10 min.;

Using a sterile pipette or syringe, select the seeds together with the liquid and try to distribute them evenly over the surface of the nutrient medium; gently shake the flask to evenly distribute the seeds.

Within 7 days, colonies of microorganisms can form on the surface of the agarized medium. If this did not happen, then the planting of seeds was successful.

Seedling care

Vessels with seeds are placed in diffused light at a temperature of 20-23℃. Daylight hours should last at least 12 hours. Depending on the type of orchid, the germination time can vary from 4-5 weeks to 7-9 months: first, small green balls with rhizoids – thread —like outgrowths are formed from the seeds, thanks to which the phalaenopsis is fixed on the surface and absorbs water with dissolved minerals; over time, the first leaves are formed from the seedling, and then real roots.

After 10-12 months, young plants are transplanted into a sterilized (steamed) soil, which includes crushed coniferous bark, sphagnum moss, fern rhizomes in a ratio of 1:1:1. Crushed activated carbon is added to the mixture (10 tablets per liter of soil): plastic cups are filled with drainage material, then prepared with a substrate; the seedlings are carefully, in a circular motion, removed from the container and the roots are washed.

In another way, a little water is poured into the container, then it is poured together with the sprouts into a wide vessel. Add 0.5% fundazole solution (2 ml), stand for 10 minutes, then carefully remove the seedlings with a brush; the planted plants are not watered.

They should be regularly sprayed with soft water at room temperature. The substrate should always remain moist; after six months, the young plant is transplanted into a standard ground for orchids.
